Being a woman in a big box gym can be terrifying. I can’t tell you how many women request in home workouts because they are "intimidated" by going to the gym.
I call this "gymtimidation".
You don’t want to go because once you walk in you are lost.
You feel judged. Everyone seems to be staring at you. "They are aren’t they? I’m so fat. They know I don’t belong here"
You feel like you have no idea what you’re doing. "Is this right? I bet its not? WTF does this machine even do?!"
You end up on the same treadmill because all the equipment you wanted to use is taken. "Okay, screw this, I’ll just go run." Or you just leave….
Well, I’ve been there. I am still there. When someone in better shape than me comes in the gym I get intimidated. I hate walking onto a weight floor of all men, because they stare. I hate when the equipment I need is taken because I have to figure out an alternative.
But, after seven years of consistent gym-going, I’ve learned how to get over this gymtimadation HELLA fast.
In honor of International Women’s Day, here are 5 ways to be the badass woman you are in the gym.
1. Have a plan
Know what you are going to do when you get to the gym. If it is your first time at said gym, go for a walk on the treadmill and check out what is there. Make notes in your phone about what is there. Take that info & write yourself a workout or get one from the internet. I am also happy to write gym workouts for people, for free (rn).
2. Get your music ready
Make your own "Badass B" playlist and list to it on the way to they gym, on the way in the gym, and through your workouts. I will post a Spotify playlist this week you can use. Something about having powerful words in your ear makes you feel more powerful. I always blast music on the way to the gym and have go to power songs for when I start to feel conscious or intimidated.
3. Remember no one cares about you
No one cares and I mean this in the nicest way. Everyone is caught up in there own workout. They have had the self-conscious thoughts as you at one point or another. They really don’t care what you are doing.
4. Kill them with kindness
I used to have bad resting gym face. You look at me, you’re getting the death stare. I did this because I was insecure, I did not want to talk, I wanted to look like I knew what I was doing. It just made me more in secure. Smile and have fun because, again, no one cares. You might as well be comfortable and enjoy yourself.
*PS This a great representation of me during my rest period (only facing forward :’))
5. Have a montra
When all else fails, have a saying you can repeat when you start to feel like running to that treadmill and saying fuck it. Mine is "Just do you, boo. Focus on your workout". Talk to yourself, don’t just listen to the endless stream of self-conscious bull your mind says.
Being a woman in the gym can suck, but it shouldn’t, and it doesn’t have to.
